The humble tradition of knitwear becomes high fashion when reimagined with modern technology and a fresh, creative eye.

Today knitwear is once again taking up a prominent place in the wardrobe, as we can see from a number of trends preview and from runaway collections, thanks to a new generation of Knit designers that are growing and experimenting with new techniques. Collections where the leitmotif is the lightness, irregularity and structure of the fibers. Craft and natural elements are revisited in a high-tech key. The lightness that characterized the weights of summer yarns remains, but it takes on volume and bulk, and becomes soft and fluffy thanks to yarns that recall the allure of fur. A new, fuzzy, brushed and compact comfort made from uneven yarns that are malfilé¹ like a soft, delicate and comfortable cocoon. Soft surfaces, like impalpable plush, fur-effects, interwoven long-pile materials, soft, noble, natural but also delicate wools. A fairy-tale world where naturalness and refinement are always linked. The international knitscape is today more inovative also attempting to explore all many technical options and the ability of fibers to offer a new type of modernity. Minimalism is revisited with a warmer, more human feel, with soft, delicate yarns.

Mohair² is ubiquitous. Simplicity is softened to create a general effect of peace and harmony. The gentleness of the mohair is also revealed through the poetic combination of colors in the macro bouclé.In this journey through knitwear Italy is playing a crucial role since almost the 80% of worlwide knitwear is produced in throughout several Italian regions: a geography that is split into various areas, which may be referred to as truly highly specialised districts. From luxury maisons, like Chanel to avant-garde designer like Rick Owens or Gareth Pugh, everybody is producing the most sophisticated knits in Italy. From a historical point of view, Lombardy and Piedmont have played a major role, Veneto is the region with a tradition of a medium-high knitwear product.

Umbria boasts high and widespread quality, also in its numbers, specialised in a traditional product and in cashmere (a prime example is the success of Brunello Cucinelli), whilst Carpi initially concentrated on a lower end and economical knitwear product, raising the quality level in the 1980s to keep up with the competition. The territory boasts numerous businesses covering various segments, including the lowest ones, produced in Prato and Signa in Tuscany, to arrive at the most basic ones produced in Barletta.
Running parallel with this growth of knitwear, a new generation of talents is arising and Italy is the country driving the development of this exciting new trend. To know more, look for our next post on rising Italian talents.

The winners among the 7 finalists of Who Is On Next? – a fashion contest that seeks out the best upcoming Made in Italy fashion designers and gives them the chance to present their collections in a fashion show – were announced during the 84th edition of Pitti Immagine Uomo. The experimental face of Fondazione Pitti Discovery also introduced its collaboration with Pizza Magazine, a six-monthly magazine on culture and contemporary Made in Italy style that engaged the 25-year-old photographic talent Carolina Amoretti for occasion.

The two co-winners of the fifth edition of Who Is On Next? were SuperDuper Hats; a brand of handmade hats created by designers Matteo Gioli, Ilaria and Veronica Cornacchini, and Casamadre; with its shoe collection developed by designers Alessia Crea and David Parisi.

The winners:

Super Duper Hats

The new men’s collection draws inspiration from the Hobo, the homeless vagabond who symbolizes adventure and inner life. The combination of rare raw materials and hammered fabrics creates a scenery where everything results harmonious.

Casamadre

Tradition, roots and research are the company’s key words. The SS 2014 men’s collection draws inspiration from the circus world in its best-known, classic and vintage version with its grotesque imagery, intentionally unproportioned figures represented by overemphasized shapes, powerful colors and playful details.

The other finalists:

Christian Pellizzari

Ongoing contamination, a mix of tailored garments, sportswear, evening and casual pieces, classic Made-in-Biella fabrics and more sophisticated materials. The SS 2014 collection dreams of a trip along the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Matteo Molinari

The winner of the LCF Best Collection of the Year 2011 prize by the London College of Fashion, Matteo Molinari’s creations are based on the use of traditional crocheting, drawn-thread and knitting techniques combined with classic men’s tailoring. The collection’s style is a blend of neat and mathematical cuts, androgynous silhouettes and processing techniques carried out by hand in Italy.

Giacomorelli

The SS 2014 collection is a long journey in four stops. Starting with a walk along Savile Row, great emphasis is placed on the details of British elegance. Next up is Spain with its typical colors. Then comes Africa, with an exploration that goes from Kenya to the tropical forest and last but not least comes the US with an in-depth study of nineties sneakers. The journey terminates in Las Vegas: showy patterns reinterpret classics in fun colors and glitter matchings.

Paola Puro

The “Puro” man is a free-spirited and visionary person with a great sense of humour. No preconceptions about men’s fashion, someone who feels free to play with color and who certainly feels free to be pure. The SS 2014 collection focuses on the body and the spirit: silk, linen and cotton bourette take on warm earth colors, China blue makes its away among natural ones like the place where sky and earth meet. Agates, quartz crystals, tourmalines and lapis lazulis create a kaleidoscope of colors and energy interacting with the body and spirit following the credo of crystal therapy.

L. Chiussi & son.

The collection draws inspiration from the bad boys of “Once Upon a Time in America”. The fabrics are elegant and sophisticated, and recall the ones used for old tailor-made suits but are used in new and unusual combinations.

A heart not blemished by betrayal is what Cor Sine Labe Doli truly means. A latin motto inscribed on the coat of arms of Corato; a small town in the southeast region of Italy and birthtown of the brand’s founder, that perfectly expresses the brand’s intent. Inspired by ancient values and a long-lost elegance, revisited with a modern and avant-garde approach, Cor Sine Labe Doli is pure creativity, artisanal essence and coolness all rolled into one. All of which is rigorously Made in Italy. Rooting its strengths in the authentic and traditional elegance of male Italian fashion, the brand redesigns and handcrafts the bow tie into an innovative, original and stylish ceramic experiment, breathing new life into one of the most conventional male accessories. New shapes, new usages and an adult target that doesn’t take itself too seriously, are all essential parts of the experiment. Cor Sine Labe Doli’s papillon becomes the key accessory of any male or female outfit, adding a touch of glamour and eccentricity to anything from a classic waistcoat to a simple t-shirt or even a little black dress.

Born as a dream in a world made of friendship and founded on a sense of belonging to its native origins, Cor Sine Labe Doli looks at the fashion world with the eyes of a child. Growing internationally since its first ceramic bow tie in 2009, it molds “innocence, simplicity, refinement, linearism and curiosity” in every single artisanal creation it makes, and preserves its innate spontaneity still wishing “to take nothing for granted, not to have patterns and fears, always wondering why things are”.

The idea behind “10 x 10 An Italian Theory”; the concept book on Italian style by Alessandro Enriquez that collects 10 “celebrity kitchen stories” on Italian heritage, memories, lifestyles and tastes, combines with the creations of the fashion talent Azzurra Gronchi in a fabulous wedding of colors, creativity and design. The result is a capsule collection of 5 limited edition handbag models and 4 revisted second-hand chairs, presented during the Milan Design Week 2013 at N°30 boutique in Via della Spiga.

Crafting an inspiring handmade project, the author and the young designer match together unexpected irony with the typical shapes of Azzurra Gronchi designs. The exclusive leather manufacturing is treated to be completely resistant and represents the taste of craftsmanship, while the lively eye-catching graphics express Alessandro Enriquez’s own vision of an Italian Theory: a shower of lucky charms, ladybirds, four-leafed clovers, horseshoes and sacred hearts. So

The capsule collection of these 50 limited edition pieces can be found in a small selection of prestigious Italian stores, but “Desiderio”, “Burlesque”, “Doris”, “Ginny” and “Design Bag” are just a quick preview of what’s to come in the S/S2014 collection.

Founded by Vivi Ponti in 2008, Vivetta is a small Italian label now sold in boutiques worldwide. Full of beauty and bows, with a touch of surreal irony and girlish rock & roll attitude, Vivetta bakes bon ton and retro with a new taste.

With a DNA that’s 100% Made in Italy, the signature style of the brand is the sweet result of a superb creativity that combines amazing designs and unexpected details. Flashing fresh fine looks with a dreamy vintage twist, and sprinkling teddy bears, kittens and daisies all over the place, Vivetta creations catch the eye because they just can’t help being lively and fun, yet polite and mademoiselle-like.

Vivetta has received a lot of attention and earned great support from ELLE Italia fashion editor Eva Fontanelli who was captured looking her fairytale-best by Scott Schuman from “The Sartorialist”, as well as from ELLE China editor Leaf Greener, ex-model Alexa Chung featured on ELLE France, and Italian fashion bloggers Chiara Ferragni and Eleonora Carisi.
