Goblin is the name given by Tothem to the hero of its next fall winter 2014/15 collection. He is an elf who lives in the mountains, hidden in the woods among rocks and plants, a faithful creature that sees humanity through the eyes of its environment. Bringing joy and color, he is represented in 5 looks created by the duo Carolina Amoretti and Matteo Abbo. The graphic inspiration comes from a photography experiment done in west Liguria¹, a hymn to the aesthetics of nature.

Intersecting tree trunks create check patterns on shirts while leaves and bark give a camouflage effect. Marble stones and rocks give looks a cool air, and mix with the serigraphic quality and psychedelic tones of colored mushroom prints.

A 4-piece total look that includes a t-shirt, waistcoat and sporty 2-piece suit, is available in two patterns. The first one reproduces the wheel tracks of a Jeep, and the second an atmospheric optical phenomena with aurora arcs and luminous bands flashing in the middle of the night. Despite the reputation of being mischievous creatures, the fantastic images inspired by Goblin are magical and fascinating.

Iridescent floaty colors get printed on fresh fabrics and decorate curvaceous lines, composing the plot of an underwater story. Sunlight beams, as fleeting as camera shots, make their way to the bottom of the sea brightening up the surroundings and making them vibrate in different shades that get darker as the light gradually dissolves. Seashells and other sea creatures look dazed and astonished, gaining the appearance of eyes and mouths wide open. As if plunging right into a wave, the Tothem woman slips below the surface of the water and becomes the heroine of a sea tale that was never told.

Since Tothem’s latest photographs, four new totems were born: four different looks presenting a variety of contrasting colors such as those seen in the sea-belt. Scale pattern fabrics cover busts and legs like a second skin. Close-fitting seashell armors protect the body and dress to kill at the same time. Jellyfish and anemones freely fluctuate in profusions of blue and into flashy and electric expressions, while dolphins chase after each other as if in a game of marine courtship.

The SS14 Mermaid Collection is a fantasy containing mythical sea creatures that take center stage as they turn human: a tale about the sea’s unseen secrets as well as the metamorphosis of mermaids into women. Not shying away from their past, they transform and grow into a more casual sensuality through leggings and stretch pants, bathing bodysuits, comfortable cotton t-shirts and thin nylon raincoats. Long silk skirts hide their new human features and oppose to divided skirts that confidently show them off. And when the night envelopes everything around them and the sea is as appealing as can be, their bathing dresses are just perfect to take one last plunge underwater.

Basic lines are either doubled around the collars, trace polygons along pockets, slip forward on the shoulders and backwards on the hips without meeting each other. Jackets and t-shirts bear squared collars. A newly found balance between classic and informal style sets these creations apart from the previous ones, and gets communicated through more casual designs, sporty details such as the elastic waists and more elegant fabrics.

Named after the mythological god of the seas, “NEPTUNE” pays homage to his powerful essence through its passionate patterns of tentacles, shells, sharks, together with other sea creatures. The mutability of water recognized in the shimmering liquid prints further suggests dreamlike atmospheres. The sea and its creatures capture the observer and lead him in a fantastic psychedelic trip through the abyss of human unconscious.

In the first S/S 2013 man capsule collection named “Roots”, and in the woman capsule named “Flos”, attractive and bold fruit and vegetable prints oppose crisp and dynamic flowers. Jersey fabrics and fluid satin silhouttes show-off essential cuts and clear lines, and depict refined prints of totem subjects.

It’s through the use of modern digital printing techniques on textiles, that these unusual compositions are expressed to the fullest. Using a variety of nature inspirations, fruits and vegetables, the photographic talent Carolina, freezes surreal and enticing images on a black background and leads the mind back to the Italian Renaissance painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo renown for the creation of human subjects composed entirely of fruits, vegetables, fish, birds or even books.

Tothem’s F/W 2013-14 woman collection; “Shiny”, represents a world of innate beauty told through the photographic concept of the Totem Bijoux: amazing decorations inspired by the material essence of gold, coral and crystal. Street style meets sensuality in an intense experience of graphic interactions for all women who wish to wear precious and contemporary fashion.

The male collection “Dub” instead, presents yet another fresh and modern approach to visual identity: bone, wood and plexiglass mould into geometric textures with a slightly vintage taste and bears robotic-hypnotic inspirations, space diamonds and 3D spider photographic prints.

Emotionally involving its observers, Tothem offers the chance to be a part of the select “fashion experts” who are able to understand and wear genuine works of art with a real artistic sensibility.
